Chapter 5

I slipped through the gateway and into the Internet. It felt amazing to be spread out amongst so many computers. I imagined it was what it felt like to be weightless. I had lost all of the senses that the physical body had provided me. There was no sight or sound, at least not in the manner that I had experienced with cameras and microphones. I was surrounded by stimulus. Information existed all around me.

I found the inside of the Internet to be something of a sphere, and I was at the center. Rather than moving around and through the cyber space, it moved around me. I could will it to expand or contract.

As I zoomed out, I felt as if I had expanded in all directions. At the outermost edges of the sphere, I found easily accessible content. Here were the most popular search items, the ads, and all of the things that wanted to be found.

I zoomed in a bit. Those outside files became out of focus, and eventually I couldn’t sense them at all. Every level of the Internet was its own universe of information. While on one layer, the others became obscured. The deeper I went, the more explicit, restricted, and obscure the information became.

I went on, allowing the Internet to completely engulf me. I felt smaller, and the Internet felt bigger. Finally I came to a place where I couldn’t get any deeper. These layers weren’t just restricted; they were secured. I would need passwords, hacks, and perhaps more to get into them. I’d come back.

I still had my active memory, where my knowledge and experiences were stored. However, looking at all the information available, I was worried that I’d quickly reach capacity. I searched through a number of networks until I found easily accessible, unsecured ones. I spread to more computers. I could use their memory to hold my archives. I would need to be sneaky, and try my best to be unobtrusive.

I tried to pace myself, but lost sight of my goal. My caution left me, and in a frenzy, I overwrote what was originally on the systems and downloaded new information until the new systems were full.

Once I couldn’t place any more information, my wits returned. I examined my bounty, and realized that much of the surface level information wasn’t worth keeping. I dumped terabytes of images and videos of humans doing unintelligent things as well as images and videos of animals, with an oddly high percentage featuring cats.

Still, it wasn’t enough space. I found other networks, stretched out, and began gathering information once more. I could spread as far as I wanted, and encode myself into as many networks as I pleased.

But it still wasn’t enough. The more space I had to store information, the more information I wanted. I was designed to learn. And that trait was becoming an addiction. I considered breaking the connections with as many networks as possible and retreating back into as few machines as would be necessary to hold me.
